Sassoon Titan Series Mains Clipper

Feb 20, 2012 | Post by: Thom Watson No Comments

This is the second post in what is becoming a series of Electrical Grooming reviews, the Titan Series from Sassoon for Men.

There are some products that seem to good to be true, and this one really did come across as such when discovering what you got vs the price, its unbelievable it really is. This is the Titan Series Mains clippers from Sassoon, a company everyone knows as being built around its amazing heritage in hair dressing. The clipper includes a hole accessory kit with extra guards, cleaning brushes, blade oil and some pretty awesome scissors.

The device itself has a fantastic weight, feels like a good quality product as well as being pretty damn powerful. So how much you ask? £15.99 I say. I know, amazing right!

Now everyone has a mate called Dave and I’m no exception, and this Dave allowed me to use this great new product on him, getting a pretty decent haircut as an outcome.

I carefully cropped around the back and sides and the clippers just glided through with no snagging and caught absolutely every hair in the process leaving it really even, needing very little touching up. I then finished off with a number 3, gradienting upwards from the hairline at the back just using the comb as a guard, finally taking the guard off completely to neaten up the edges. It was all so easy.

The scissors were actually pretty good and I just needed them to trim the top and add some texture, blending everything in; I mean, they’re obviously not professional hair dressing scissors but they really do the job.

I have to say for one my first times cutting hair, it was a surprisingly easy process that was completely down to such a good clipper and comprehensive accessory kit (and maybe my slight eye for style, but who knows). You’re not gonna cut a layered bob with this but for all your clipping needs, you’ve found the tool to do it with.

FHI Platform Hair Straighteners

Feb 20, 2012 | Post by: Thom Watson 1 Comments

I’ve long since been a user of GHD hair stylers, as anyone who owns a pair of hair straighteners will know, they are considered one of the industries best, but with a hefty price tag of £129, they don’t come cheap.

FHI are a company I’ve been aware of in the back of my mind for a while and I know more than one professional hair stylist who have protested they actually prefer using these in their salon as opposed to the new GHDs they had as they used continually to break and they find they get better results with FHI. I’m not talking about men’s barbers by the way, I mean real £35 a pop for short back and sides hair salons.

So after trying the 1 inch FHI Platform series, I can honestly understand why it’s becoming the stylist’s choice. They’re awesome! Now I have pretty straight hair that has a tendency to kink slightly as it grows, but my other half has the thickest, curliest hair of all time. All I can show you are the amazing results really and let you be the judge:

It took no time at all to get his hair like this, and I really have to point out that it took less time to do than it did with GHD’s, they seemed to glide more easily and actually run about 12 degrees hotter than GHD stylers. Even though 12 degrees is an incremental rise in heat, it does seem to make a lot of difference but the hair wasn’t burnt or over heated at all.

The stylers have a pretty good thermostat, its a standard flash alert system with a red LED that flashes rapidly when it gets to full temperature. They remain steadily hot as long as they stay on and don’t overheat. The thermostat is adjustable from about 60 degrees upwards, this is for different hair thicknesses as someone with very fine hair needs less heat than the thick haired bugger featured in the pictures above.

The resin body gets warm but not so you can’t hold it or have it against your scalp and the device feels very solid in the hand, it has a nice weight to it, and feels like a good quality piece of kit. The positioning of the plates is also incredibly accurate so even when you really clamp them shut, there isn’t any pulling on the hair.

Finally, they’re red and black and look sexy as hell, what more could you want!?

Aveda Scalp Benefits

Jan 09, 2012 | Post by: Thom Watson No Comments

If you’ve ever suffered with a dry and/or irritated scalp then Aveda Scalp Benefits is just for you, although is ideal for all hair types. Often when I’ve come across shampoos and conditioners of this type, they’ve been overly rich and greasy; however this isn’t the case with scalp benefits, that leaves your hair silky smooth but by no means lank or oily.

Scalp Benefits shampoo and conditioner are packed with Babassu, Burdock root, Echinacea, Sage leaf, Seabuckthorn oil and Vetiver, all lending a hand in helping you to achieve healthy hair and  a healthy scalp; none of this nonsense we see in adverts of ‘healthy looking hair’, which almost always implies conditioners filled with silicon that make your hair dry, but very shiny.

Brilliant for everyday use or just a treatment as and when any problems flare up!

Lush Rehab Shampoo / Veganese Conditioner

Dec 27, 2011 | Post by: Thom Watson No Comments

Let me tell you all about Lush Rehab Shampoo / Veganese Conditioner because they’re my favourites and been a part of my life on and off for around 4 years!

When I’m able to nab a free holiday to see my parents who live for part of the year in Spain, I dread, as many of you will agree with, the purely shite Spanish water, you can’t drink it, do clothes in it, and certainly not wash yourself with it. It’s so mineral rich that after a few days of using even the poshest Aveda shampoo, my hair becomes all clogged up and never really feels all too clean. Ew.

A few years ago, my particularly hip and cool grandmother bought me some products from Lush, well my mum bought it all on her behalf, and part of this gifty wifty was Lush’s Rehab Shampoo and Veganese Conditioner. These, as well as being my luxury treat in the UK have become my Spanish essentials as it’s literally the only thing I’ve found that will strip all the crap out your hair and put it back to normal; the small travel size bottles Lush sell are a god-send.

The Rehab Shampoo containing olive and jojoba as moisturisers, which yes sound immensely greasy and rich but really aren’t as the papaya and kiwi attack grease and dirt leaving the hair beautifully cleansed. The fragrance is beyond belief but not girly particularly, just very citrusy. The lather is immense, needing only a small amount to create a huge, great lather. There’s always a little left over to do your body with as well!

The counterpart – Veganese Conditioner is soothingly light with seaweed, lavender, rosemary and lemon all mounting to a beautiful product that leaves hair soft and very non greasy and smelling fantastic. It also maintains a fantastic shine throughout the day; I promise people will comment on how healthy and shiny your hair is, and that’s not because it’s, as some hair adverts profess, visibly healthy hair, its actually healthy and well treated hair!

Buy some, it’s available at your local lush or their brilliant online store, it’s worth buying just for the smell alone.

Merry Christmas from Moosehead of Oz

Nov 22, 2011 | Post by: Thom Watson No Comments

Moosehead men’s products are something pretty cool indeed, I included them in a review I did of MenAreUseless.com a while ago, and their face scrub was rather lovely .

So I was contacted and told that they had some Christmas gifts out, and I have to say, I was excited. Visually they look more aimed at younger cool guys, probably around my age, but much cooler than me (as I’m sat here writing in my old-man GAP knitwear).

The packages are in three different varieties: Define Your Style, Hard and Fast and finally, Jump Start.

I was lucky enough to try the Define Your Style gift set:
The Shower gel is fab, it’s a hair and body wash actually and really invigorating, gives you a much needed kick up the arse on a morning, leaving your skin smooth and soft and not squeaky, which is always important as it means you aren’t having your skin dehydrated by harsh soaps.

The Defining Paste is very hardwearing, suited to more funky and highly textured styles, my classic quiff was stuck on end after I’d used it, and took a bit of hair drying through to relax it, but on a second go of creating something textured and messy, I have to say, it looked great (almost cool!). For something with a more classic look and hold, the hard wearing fibre does a better job and that’s in the Hard and Fast (ooh-err) gift set!

These gift sets are a mere £9.99 each. As well as the shower gel and styling product, you also get a matching colour shower lily, which if you’ve never used one, are great for foaming your shower gel and provide light exfoliation.
