Grooming News Agents in Manchester

Feb 12, 2012 | Post by: Thom Watson No Comments

It’s something that I’ve always passed but never until recently paid that much attention to, a news agents at the Town Hall end of Cross Street in Manchester city centre. It’s a normal news agents pretty much, however the whole of the front window has been dedicated to some pretty special traditional men’s grooming products, with a huge selection of pure badger hair shaving brushes, old shaving foam blocks with wooden bowls as well as traditional soaps, colognes and a good selection of cut throats.

The prices are pretty reasonable and you can get a metal razor and brush set with stand for about £60, but there are some others going into £100+.

If you’re ever passing down that way, then check it out. I’m going to attempt to get some better pictures other than the one above from my iPhone, but it still gives you the general idea of what they’ve got. If any of you guys know any other places like this in Manchester then drop me a comment or tweet me.

MenAreUseless.com The Discovery Quarterly

What a delight to receive this handy, letterbox sized package through my door this morning from the amazing guys at MenAreUseless.com, which upon opening presented me with 5 stunning grooming products surrounded by sweets (that once again I’m sat here eating as I review).

The box is designd to let you a preview 5 rather stunning high-end grooming products in deluxe travel sizes. The is £10 and a different one is sent out every 3 months, you can either buy it as a one off or subscribe. I have to say, £10 is nothing for the great products you get, it’s like opening a Christmas present.

In this particular box I got:

Organic Homme Shave Now Wash and Shave – A brilliant SLS, paraben, alcohol, perfume and colorant FREE facial wash, that because of having such a thick lather is an amazing shave lubricant. The smell is amazing with a combination of grapefruit, geranium, ylang ylang, chamomile and mandarin. Stunning.

Billy Jealousy Illicit Body WashA rich lathering wash oozing fragrance of Bergamot, Tea, Ivy and Sandalwood, as well as moisturising hemp seed oil, all adding up to a stunning SLS and paraben free body cleanser.

Shave Works Cool Fix - An awesome post shave treatment to calm and sooth irritated skin that can flare up from shaving. The gel is pretty firm meaning you can really work it into the skin before it all absorbs, instantly cooling as it sinks in. It disappears quickly allowing you to then layer your moisturiser over the top.

John Allan’s Slick Water - A couple of drops of this before applying shave cream/gel immediately softens the skin and the hair. I found that if you exfoliate with your face scrub, dry the skin off, apply a few drops of this and then add in my gel, it made for one of the best shaves of my life, leaving my with next to no irritation.

Vitaman Foot Recovery Gel – An old favourite of mine from this naturally based Australian Grooming Company. After applying this to cleansed, tired feet, it instantly cools whilst anti-bacterial ingredients such as tea-tree leave skin disinfected. Brilliant to rejouvianete after a hard run, as well as a brilliant way to fight off that good-old man’s favourite, Athlete’s Foot.

This box is definitely worth trying for yourself as well as being a great idea for any men you know that are difficult to buy for. They also offer different packages for different things, such as the rather cool SockPlan, BladeShunner or even 5 Monthly Dental Plan. I did a review of The Works a bit ago, click to read.

Because of MenAreUseless.com’s continuing ingenuity in the world of male grooming, I am awarding them with the Manface Approved Award and by god they deserve it!

Blue Beards Revenge

Ahoy! And such. Blue Beards Revenge is the focus of this review, in particular the two lovely products that I’ve been using recently. I don’t get heavy hair growth, I am embarrassingly a member of what this company calls the ‘Bum Fluff Brigade”, but with having such sensitive skin, shaving can be a traumatic experience, involving cuts and swearing. Well, mainly swearing, even with electric. The two products I’ve been using are:

The Bluebeards Revenge Luxury Shaving Cream

The Bluebeards Revenge Post Shave Balm

Now, the first thing that I noticed about both products, is the fragrance, which initially put me off, being a massive fragrance-phobic and having sensitivity to many forms of ‘parfum’. This however, had no undesirable effects on my skin, so I wrote it off as me being fussy. It’s quite a classic and manly smell; I really think it would appeal to most guys!

After loading my shaving brush up with, and I must stress, the tiniest amount possible, I was treated to a full face of lather. One thing that I do look for in shaving foam is staying power, and this definitely has it, it will not move whilst shaving, which pleased me inside! After rinsing off from shaving, which proved to be a far more lubricated experience (ooh-err), my skin felt very smooth and comforted. It really had prevented any small cuts, which even though a lot of that depends on a good blade, proper lubrication is paramount.

After drying off, I then applied a small amount of the balm. It’s very jelly like and thin, which is the best thing possible when talking about an aftershave balm. It sinks into the skin and instantly left it soothed and smooth. The contained aloe did leave the skin feeling cool whilst the witch hazel does a great job of preventing infected hair follicles (which I can get from time to time). Because of it having such a low viscosity, it then allowed me to apply the rest of my skincare, not worrying about my face having a ‘tacky’ feeling, as though there was too much product

The Aloe that featured in both products really jumped out at me, as I’ve always been a massive fan and believer of the power of Aloe gel. The products are also paraben free which is a very popular move at the moment in our industry. The removal of Methylparaben therefore makes me happy, as when this is exposed to UVB (one form of sun radiation), it can elevate skin damage.

Finally, the thing that really made me smile is that for every tub of the shaving cream purchased, 50p is donated to ‘Operation Florian’ and ‘The Fire Fighters Charity’.  That’s 5% of the RRP! Love it!

All that’s left to say is that I can see these guys making some big waves in the shaving and grooming market and I expect to be seeing them featuring on the high street soon enough, as they really do outshine some of the crap that lines our shelves.

Clinique Post Shave Healer

If like me, you’re a delicate flower when it comes to shaving, and even though you use a new, multi-blade, top of the line razor, a good shave gel and prepare the skin in every way imaginable, you still get a burn afterwards.

Well besides making sure you don’t apply any fragrance in the shaved area, have a look at (you guessed it) Clinique’s Post-Shave Healer. Containing Aloe Vera, it soothes the skin and any self-inflicted razor burn as well as promoting your natural healing process to quickly repair the skin. You need the tiniest little bit, and I find a bottle lasts for aaaages. As soon as you’ve applied it, don’t really rub it in, just massage it gently over the top and leave it to soak in, after that you can apply the rest of your skincare.

Oh, top tip, use a good exfoliator (from the same range) and use this before shaving, this softens the skin, and promotes the lubrication of your blade against the skin, therefore minimising any little nicks and cuts.
